We learnt (rather absorbed) the basics of the philosophy underlying Vona du Toit’s thinking from our first year in 1965; my sense of self as a growing person and particularly as an Occupational Therapist has since that time been indivisible from my understanding and application of Creative ability and the VdTMoCA. Being a pragmatist at heart I’m passionate about the VdTMoCA because it genuinely WORKS. This model enables us, as OTs and OT teachers but also as partners, parents and community members, to contribute so much to so many and varied persons lives and situations – what can be more worthwhile than that?

Carole Pretorius

Representative for the du Toit family on the Board

B.O.T. (Hons.) Univ. Pretoria.
Dip. Spec. Educ. for Severely Mentally Handicapped (Unisa)
Teachers Diploma in Occupational Therapy. Dip.Ed. Ther.Voc.(UP)
Nat.Dip. OT.(Pretoria College of Occupational Therapy)

I am in private practice (doing medico-legal evaluations) and continue to incorporate the VdTMoCA principles/concepts in reports when drawing conclusions about the client’s functional level and formulating recommendations. It was exciting to be a student and lecturer in the early days when there was so much energy and debate around the development of creative ability.

In 1963 I was fortunate to be in a class of 6 which was the first group graduating under Vona. She devoted much time to ensure we went into the field informed by her philosophy…which developed into the practice model of Creative Ability. I have carried this groundwork with me as the basis for all my Occupational Therapy experiences over 50+ years. It was a privilege to participate in the further definition of the Nature of Creative Ability during the early 1970s and ongoingly through my association with this Foundation. I truly believe Occupational Therapists have a special destiny which is only enhanced by this theory which is so central to what we are about! Viva OT!
